Description

Hiking trail with a 360° panorama over Crocodile River and Harties Dam

What should I expect?

Starting with a gentle uphill walk parallel to the course of the Crocodile River for a few kilometers, your field of vision expands with every step as you gain altitude.

As you reach the first checkpoint, the river will be to your right, with the Randburg Dome in the far distance, Pelindaba due East and Hartbeespoort Dam straight ahead.

Up to here it’s about 3 km – now you have a choice of turning around and heading back, or go on and get into the serious part of this hike.

A left turn will lead to a steep ascent, clambering over some boulders until you summit the ridge, a saddle between the two waters of the Crocodile River and Harties Dam. This is the most breathtaking Magaliesberg panorama in its full splendor.

Following a narrow game trail now requires a sure footing over the rocks… Until the terrain flattens out and the descent follows the trails downhill.
The path is properly sign posted, so you shouldn’t get lost on the way.

With an overall distance of 8.8 km, this will take you between 2 to 4 hours. Proper hiking boots are required, and sufficient water must be taken along – we feel it’s a 2 liter hike.
On the return leg, there is a possible shortcut to reduce the total distance to 6 km.

Why is this special?

  • This is the only access point to the trail – and you won’t get this view anywhere else around Harties
  • Numbers are strictly limited and you’ll never have to put up with throngs of people wandering about too busy with taking selfies
  • There are baboons and vervet monkeys, kudu and duiker to be seen. Also, the Cape Vultures might come to check if you’re still walking…

When can I go?

This hike is open to the public only on Sundays, and must be booked in advance.
Gates open at 08h00 and there is safe parking inside the property.

If you’re a group of hikers and you’re looking for a special day – get in touch with us here and we’ll get back to you.

Where do I go after the hike?

Well, that’s obvious! First, you take the Crocodile River Airboat Run (you’ve earned it!), and then you pop in to The Rusty Feather next door to chill.
